Rückstoss Gondoliere

Fruits De Mer Records have announced the release next month of Head Music, a whopping 95-minute double-LP compilation which includes our cover version of the Kraftwerk / proto-NEU! piece Rückstoss Gondoliere.

Kraftwerk was formed in 1970 by Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider with a floating cast of drummers, guitarists and bassists, but in early 1971 Hütter left, preferring to return to his architecture studies than carry on touring. By May that year the line-up had settled as Schneider with drummer Klaus Dinger and guitarist Michael Rother, and it was this trio that performed Rückstoss Gondoliere on the German TV show Beat Club, Schneider playing a bass part on flute via a bank of electronic effects. They subsequently started recording an album together, but after some disagreements Dinger and Rother left and formed Neu!. Hütter then rejoined Schneider and the pair remained at the core of Kraftwerk for the next 35 years.

Rückstoss Gondoliere therefore represents an important moment in the history of Kosmische Musik (or ‘Krautrock’ as it was dubbed by the British music press) and contains many recognisable elements of both Kraftwerk and Neu!’s future directions. The original TV clip can be seen here on Youtube complete with oscilloscope visuals and Kraftwerk’s trademark traffic cones, and has been officially released on the Beat Club Best Of ’71 DVD and complete ’70-’72 box set.

Our version has already been described by Mark Barton as a “cosmic symphony which cyclically shifts from moments of calm to full on wig flipped meltdown … an awesome display of skull suturing sonics.”

Here’s a brief taster:

Head Music contains 17 more Kosmische covers, from the classic to the downright obscure, and like all Fruits De Mer releases it’s limited edition coloured vinyl only. Their previous albums have sold out on pre-orders alone, so to avoid disappointment head over to their website and email Keith to reserve a copy.
